Pivoting the Possibilities
I combine balance, texture and purpose to find the best use of one or many features of a space.
Check out a few DIY projects below.
My small bathroom toilet was inset between two walls with a cupboard above it. The cupboard looked like a dense block looming over the toilet with solid wood doors, tightening up the feel of the space.
I needed the storage the cupboard provided, so as I stood, (pivoting the possibilities), a vision came to me! I KNEW WHAT I COULD DO! But would it work? it wasn’t going to be a “slam dunk” solution, but with some tweaking, I knew it would work.
I bought two rustic floral metal wall décor pieces. The rectangular frame was the correct height and width and the distressed chipped paint exposed light brown wood underneath to add texture and appeal. Replacing the doors with the two wall decor pieces made the space feel larger.
I love to walk the alleys of neighborhoods, looking for treasure’s others deem as rubbish. I call this style, “alley chic.” I came across stacked small wood boxes with a sequence of numbers on their sides. As I stopped in the alley to investigate more closely, I met the owner of the home outside his garage. He had used these boxes for storing an array of bolts and nails but they were originally from an eyeglass store - when a customer purchased frames they were placed in the boxes and the numbers on the sides tracked them from start to finish. I grouped the boxes together and add a decal on the smooth back side of each box to create wall decor!
Cookbook Holder
I transformed an old wooden window screen found at a salvage yard to a wall-mounted cookbook holder. A piece of colorful fabric behind the screen gave it some color and I used turn-buckles and a cable to hang the books for display.
Connecting the Dots
I had a tall wall that didn’t need a backsplash, but I wanted the textural appeal of penny tile and to keep it consistent with the style of my home. Typically used on floors for its texture and vintage look, penny tile was the perfect go-to for me!
